1. Describe the preachers of the Great Awakening. You may name specific figures, explain their methods for converting, and explain the content of their message.

The Great Awakening was a religious movement in the 1730's and 1740's that influenced new ideas and views about the church. People called Itinerant Preachers taught the colonies about these new ways. They traveled around and preached to gatherings in meeting houses, greens, city streets and clearings. These ministers were untrained and exciting, they gave such vivid descriptions of the bible with pure excitement and dramatic gestures. The people of this time fell in love, they enjoyed the speaker to become frenzied to hysteria, weeping and screaming, they also loved that they completely understood what they were preaching about. George
Whitefield was considered one of the greatest preachers to use this technique, he "turned the church into a theater". The Itinerant Ministers preached that people do not need to go to church every day to obtain salvation, they explained that reading the bible and worshiping the word of God was enough to obtain their salvation and peace with God.

The Great Awakening: Question #2
2.) What was the Great Awakening and how did it influence a new way of thinking in the colonies?
By Collin Pullum

Summary:

The Great Awakening was a time period during the birth of Amerian independence in which itinerent ministers expressed ideas about religious freedom to the public. These ideas were meant to have people convert to where they could feel comfortable of challenging the authorities of government. These ideas included the thought of religious freedom, that you would not be sent into eternal damnation if you did not attend the church, as long as you still read the bible, or the ways of god. So if you were a farmer, who had to travel thirty minutes to arrive at the church just to listen to an unexcitible lesson of god, You wouldn't want to do that, right? You would probably just like to learn god at the comfort of you own home. That is some of the ideas the ministers tried to spread across the colonies.

These ideas were higly unpopular by people in maybe a higher class, and especially the church did not respect these ideas at all. But, most of the public liked these ideas. I would like the idea of learning, or being educated while I am at my home. These ideas have most likely spread throughout time, tolerated or not. Most ideas of people getting a college degree by working in their own home have come from these budding ideas.

Now, usually it is not entertaining listening to a priest, in a monotone voice, explain to the public why god is good. This is what the itinerent ministers sought out to not be. They spoke, giving a visual picture in the mind what God's sanctuary, or Satin's home would look like. So they were pretty much telling you, "so, where do you want to go?" You're going to want to side with god right? Yet, if your sitting in front of a boring priest, just claiming god is good just because... You might not believe what he is saying, you could be tricked into thinking that the devil could be god!!! Which is highly unlikely, but if you think about it now, that is a possibility. The priests also gave ideas of self-independence, and liberation. Ideas like this made the colonies more tolerant of each other. This made the colonies, more tolerant of each other.

The Great Awakening
Question: What where the effects of the great awakening?

The great awakening effected tons of people. As it went from colonies it has different effects on everyone. All the preaching people where pretty much the cause of this. They all went around spreading there religions. They did this send a spiritual message to play a roll of a type of diversion. I would imagine they also did this to bring peace to there colonies, because people with no religion who have nothing to live for or don't think anything good will come out of life are just crazy boring people. They just think when they die they will be wiped off the face of the earth and they will not go anywhere they will just rot in the ground. But if you have a religion you might be a more happier person because you believe that after you die you go to haven your you get reincarnated or you go to some crazy party place after death from the earth. So I believe that people did this so that people in there colonies didn't go crazy by thinking that nothing will happen after death. So I think that The Great Awakening had a very big effect on people all over the world because it saved us all from a very scary life of just thinking we are going to die and just rot in the ground. When in reality most people think they are going to go somewhere after death. Almost every one in the world has a religion. There is Buddhism, Christianity, Catholic, Atheism, and all sorts of stuff! Some people believe in more than one God. Others only believe in one. And there are some who don't believe in any God, but they believe in Karma or something other than that.

Scotty Sinks period 1 Great Awakening question 2. What was the great Awakening and how did it influence a new way of thinking amoung the colonists.

The great Awakening was a very important time in our U.S. It took place around the 1730's and 40's it was a movement in witch our U.S. ministers shared their ideas about religious freedom to the people. It was a bold move, and not everyone agreed with its ideas; however the great Awakening changed the angle that people looked about religion. For example it influenced Colonists to believe in what Gods sanctuary was or how satins place was thought as. Colonists began to think about religious-related governments, and social effects. I think that the great Awakening was an effective movement among the colonies and it had a good reason to take place.

The Great Awakening was a religious movement in the mid 1700's. The movement started with a few preachers who emphasized ideas such as spirituality and equality. During this time there was much debate on the subject. For example, rich men typically didn't like the idea of equality because they liked having more power than the poor. Ideas among the colonists were very diverse. Even though the rich men did not like the idea of equality, many highly approved of it. For example, many women liked the idea because in the colonies there rights were restricted. They wanted rights such as voting. In addition, the idea of spirituality caught many peoples attention. For example, the preaches would preach using threats such as declaring one would go to hell if they did not follow certain rules. These rules were the rules of God which could be read in the Bible. Overall, the Great Awakening made a strong affect on religions in America today.

The great awakening was like the enlightenment in the way of new ideas being created and being accepted by the people. The enlightenment was about philosophers thinking of new government ideas. All the ideas about democracy were rejected by the kings that ruled all the lands. The great awakening, however was accepted by everyone and many liked the idea that it also preached challenging authority. The great awakening said that if you lived far from church, you didn't have to go, all you had to do was read a bible and understand God's message. It also preached that everyone is equal in the eyes of god and there is no discrimination (except slavery).

The Preachers of the Great Awakening had different methods of teaching. Like Jonathan Edwards he told his congregation that "they hung by a slender thread", so that with out going to church you would not go to heaven. There was also Stephan Williams who was the preacher of Long-meadow he taught like Edwards but his sermons were more boring than Edwards. Edwards sermons were very interesting and you could always have a picture of what he was saying. When he spoke to people outside of the church and gave speeches they were very lively. There was also George Whitefield he taught that people should focus less on earthly matters and more on the concerns of the soul.

The Great awakening had a great influence on a lot of people. One of the thing that was very interesting was the preachers background. The preachers had backgrounds of doctors, teachers, and counselors. I think that’s interesting because when do you see a doctor or teacher and even a counselor as a preacher! I would think that maybe they would try to see if you know anything about there religion and see if you could be ther new preacher.
One of the methods of the Great awakening was they told people if they did not come to church or beleve in God then they will go to the opposite the heaven. When people herd that they could go to hell then they got scared! Some people came to church after that. The great awaking started to spread fast through out the Connecticut River valley and Massachusetts.

2. What was the Great Awakening and how did it influence a new way of thinking among the colonists?
The great awakening was a religious movement during the 1730's and 1740's. It was in Massachusetts and Connecticut. This was a great influence on the colonists faith and the church. The community was centered around the church and churches were centered around worship, business, and social gatherings. In the 1700's most Americans were scattered throughout the countryside. It was very difficult to get to the church because everyone was in different places. Because of this most people didn't go to church. In the beginning of the 1730's ministers began to travel throughout the colonies. The preachers were very entertaining and loud, not like most preachers. They would present a message of salvation in which the colonists became moved and inspired. Since they were so moved by the speeches many colonists would organize churches, build houses, and hire ministers. The Great Awakening also sent a message saying that religions and all classes of people were equal.

What was the Great Awakening and how did it influence a new way of thinking among the colonists?

The Great Awakening was a religious movement. This was when ministers presented powerful messages of salvation that provided early Americans with a great sense of nationality. It occurred in the 1730's and 1740's starting in the Connecticut River Valley and Western Massachusetts- American colonies.

The colonists were influenced to think that they needed to go to church each Sunday in order to have salvation. Since then, colonists would think that they needed to go to church as much as they needed to have a good life with food, shelter, water, etc. Colonists were told that if they don't go to church then they'd have a bad life. In their after life, they'd burn in hell.

The Great Awakening: Question #2
What was the Great Awakening and how did it influence a new way of thinking in the colonies?

The Great Awakening was a religious movement during the 1730's and 1740's that created new ideas and views about church and nationality. It was during the time of American Independence where ministers expressed their ideas about religious freedom to the public. This began to change the way people thought about church and their religion.

Ministers had to often preach in public because they were running out of room to do it in a church. They were generally uneducated, untrained, and unrecognized, but gave dramatic and moving speeches that drew large crowds to them. As the Great Awakening moved threw the colonies, it had different effects in different places, and started to become unwelcome to the upper class and churches. Most of the public loved the ideas that were brought up, because they symbolized a sort of freedom.

The ministers gave visual effects of what God's sanctuary was and also satin's home too. The poor loved this idea because it showed them what to look forward to. In the end the Great Awakening had lasting effects. It had brought new values to the table that effected politics and daily life. It also brought some independence and equality too. The Great Awakening finally came to an end during the 1740's, but its effects were long lasting!

The Great Awaking showed the church that there were more than one belief on death. The priests told them that the old church is wrong and that they are not going to go to hell. The priests taught the forgiveness of sins. Priests said that if god does not forgive your sins than you will go to hell in the after life. The sermons that priests told were gloom and damnation. The Great Awaking for a period of time made the church a terrifying vivid image of burning hell. Thats all I have to say about that.

Answer-The Great Awakening was a religious movement that swept through colonies in the 1730's and 1740's. It affected the colonies by drawing people of different regions, classes, and races. Ministers from different colonies me and shared ideas with one another. The Great Awakening promoted ideas that may also have affected colonial politics. Sermons also led some colonists to begin demanding more political power, and equality. Revivals became popular places to talk about political and social issues. People from those colonies with less political freedom were thus introduced to more democratic systems used in other colonies. That is how the Great Awakening Affected many colonists.

What was the Great Awakening and how did it influence a new way of thinking among the colonists.

The great awakening was a religious movement. Its drama and emotion touched women and men of all ages and backgrounds. A New England preacher, Jonathan Edwards, set off the Great Awakening in the colonies. He preached of the sweetness and the beauty of God. He also warned listeners that unless they headed the Bible's teachings , they would be sinners in the hands of an angry God headed for the fiery torments of hell. The Great Awakening aroused bitter debate. People who supported the movement often split away from their old churches to form new ones. The growth of so many new churches forced colonists to become more tolerant of people with different beliefs. The preachers and ministers argued that that book learning was less important that preaching from a heart filled with the holy spirit. This sense of independence encouraged many believers to challenge people in authority when their religious liberties were at stake. pertains believed that everyone had a duty to study the bible. So education become more important so they can read and study the bible.

The effects of the great awakening are like the impact of the awakening. The great awakening aroused bitter debate. People who supported the movement often split away from their old churches form new ones that is one effect of the awakening. The great awakening contribute in an other way to the spread of democratic feelings in the colonies that is also a effect of the great awakening. Also many of the awakenings new preachers were not as well educated as most ministers. Another effect is when they argued that book learning was less important than preaching from a holy spirit.
