Stephen Randall, George Washington's First Inaugural Address

1. Read and discuss the primary source, examining the who, what, when, where, and why.

In this primary source, the who is George Washington, the what is his inaugural address, and the when is Thursday, April 30, 1789. The where is New York, and the Why is to give his country a speech for getting formally admitted to office.

2. Write a summary about the document. Explain the main ideas about the primary source.

This primary source is George Washington giving his inaugural address to Congress and the people of the United States of America. He is talking about how he was called to duty by his people, and how hears the voice of his country with "veneration and love." It is also to introduce himself to his people, and give them a general idea of what he will be doing, and how he feels being elected president. He also said he was confident the work of Congress would be "in the pursuit of the public good."

3. Examine an interesting quotation or sentence and justify why you selected this statement

An interesting quote I found was the first sentence which was: "Among the vicissitudes incident to life no event could have filled me with greater anxieties than that of which the notification was transmitted by your order, and received on the 14th day of the present month." I chose this quote because I found it interesting that he had said that he feels great anxiety being elected president. I don't think that the country would like to know that they have a president who feels great anxiety being elected. On the other hand, he was honest and recognized the importance of being the first president.

4. Write a question you would like to ask about this primary source. You may ask a question to the author, event, or character in the primary source.

Dear George Washington,

Which job did you find more difficult; being president of the United States of America, or leading our country during the Revolutionary War?

Sincerley,
Stephen Randall

5. Write your opinion or reaction to this document.

My opinion/reaction to this document was that George Washington cares deeply about his country, and how much he loves it. Also, once again I found it interesting that he said that "....no event could have filled me with greater anxieties than that of which the notification was transmitted by your offer...."

6. Any unique or unusual qualities of the source?

George Washington was honest and a great leader. We were very lucky to have him as our first president.

7. Who was the author, speaker, or creator of the source?

George Washington

8. For what audience was the source created for?

It was created for the Senate, the House of Representatives, as well as the American people.

9. For what purpose was the source created for?

This source was created for George Washington to give his First Inaugural Adress.

10. List three things about the source that were important.

1. To give his country, the Senate and the House of Representatives what he will be doing.
2. Emotions about taking office.
3. Being truthful to his country.

11. What can be learned from this source?

From this source, I can learn that being elected into office is very important, and puts alot of pressure on the president. Especially if you are the first president.

-French,President of the united states,
-Vendemiaire was the first month of the french calender

Write a summary about the document. Explain the main ideas about the primary source.

In the Louisiana Purchase Treaty it tells us how it started. It says that Thomas Jefferson wanted to own more land than anyone in America. He also wanted to add more states in to his country. Thomas wanted to be more powerful than his neighbor Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1762, all of the French territory west of the Mississippi including the island of New Orleans was ceded to Spain, and the whole territory of France eastward of the Mississippi except the Island of Orleans was ceded to Great Britain.
